My wife was pregnant with our first child and my employer went bust...
Sounds familiar?
Well, it was the luckiest day of my life.
When I realised that the company I had worked for for the past 5 years would not be paying any back wages or compensation, I sat down with my wife and thought about the future.
This was back in 2002, the year of the "dotcom" bust, and finding another job in management in a multimedia company was not going to be easy.
Plus, I was really itching to go into business for myself, instead of having to take orders from a boss.
And it helped that with our first baby coming, I wanted to see him grow up, and not spend my days in an office somewhere.
That's when I decided to become a freelancer.
Using my knowledge of linguistics and management, I set up a translation agency. But I had never managed a translation agency before, nor had I run my own business. And sure I had no money to invest.
I had to learn, and quickly, how to:
- get enough customers
- balance my books
- balance my work and personal life
And now I am ready to share what I learned with others.
